Private sector healthcare is a high-growth, ever-evolving, innovative industry, presenting companies with a diverse array of challenges

UK healthcare is compelled to deliver exceptional care under intense cost pressures. A rising and ageing population with complex illnesses puts pressure on NHS and social care staffing. And, increasing financial constraints across the healthcare ecosystem are driving both the NHS and private sector healthcare to find different strategies.

Larchwood Care

The challenge
We were engaged by the special servicer to act as asset manager for the Larchwood Care portfolio of more than 60 care homes across the UK Mainland and Northern Ireland. Larchwood Care asked us to oversee the operation of these portfolios and work with them to maximise the homes' EBITDARM while providing a robust challenge to the proposed operational strategies for each home.
How we helped
We worked closely with the operators to devise and implement practical turnaround plans for the under-performing homes in the portfolio, significantly improving its regulatory compliance. It now outperforms local authority benchmarked operators. We worked with the special servicer and PropCo directors to enhance the value of certain homes by improving the development value of these homes.
The results
We implemented a portfolio realisation strategy disposing of certain targeted assets, successfully delivering value that exceeded initial expectations. We are now working with the special servicer, the directors of the PropCos and the operators to plan and execute a portfolio exit in the medium term. As asset manager, we provide a 'one-stop shop' for the PropCo directors by providing the required back-office functions for these companies.

Routes Healthcare

The challenge
Routes is a leading provider of specialist person-centred health and home care services. Operating from 14 branches across the north of England, the business provides specialist complex care packages for people with long-term health conditions, clinically-led enhanced homecare packages and end-of-life care, enabling people to spend their final days at home. Backed by Key Capital Partners since 2016, Routes' shareholders engaged us to act as lead advisers on the sale of the business.
How we helped
Our corporate finance team delivered a streamlined yet highly competitive process with a focused selection of key private equity and trade buyers to unlock maximum value for the shareholders and find the right strategic partner for management.
The results
We introduced Palatine Private Equity to the process, who were eventually chosen as the preferred partner, supported with reinvestment from Key Capital Partners. We used our technical expertise to lead the detailed negotiations, project-manage various diligence streams and advise on the key commercial terms of the transaction. We also provided tax and debt advisory services on the deal, showing how our integrated service offering can facilitate transactions and protect value for our clients.
"I am very grateful for the diligence, patience and dedicated support received from Grant Thornton. From preparation through to final execution, the guidance, advice and direction was incredibly helpful - notwithstanding the team's sector knowledge being a critical success factor. Thank you to the team for all of the support received, you regularly went over and above the remit to ensure we achieved mutual success for all stakeholders."
