We recently hosted a virtual roundtable for charity chairs of audit committees, focusing on the current pressures that these organisations are facing. Stephen Dean and Harriet Raine share a summary of the conversation.
While economic factors, such as the cost-of-living crisis, have had a clear impact, the charity sector has also seen issues with staffing, management of estates, and an overall increase in demand.
The roundtable was attended by charity chairs of audit committee or equivalent and some of our audit, assurance and risk experts from the not-for-profit team. The conversation, held under the Chatham House Rule, covered:
- the impact of the current economic environment, specifically how key funding streams have been affected
- how service demand has changed during the period
- other economic pressures, including challenges arising from staffing and estates
- mitigations, and how charities can work collaboratively
- reflections on what a successful charity could look like in the future
