Simon Sheaf

I am a partner in the firm and lead our provision of actuarial and risk management services to the general insurance sector. I have worked in and consulted the sector for more than 30 years. 
I have extensive experience working with a wide variety of general insurers, including commercial lines insurers, personal lines insurers, London market companies, syndicates at Lloyd's of London, legacy insurers, reinsurers and mutuals. 
I regularly fulfil a variety of senior roles in the general insurance sector including SMF 20/Chief Actuary; Independent Expert and expert witness in contentious insurance matters; Independent Expert on Part VII and Section 13 transfers of insurance liabilities; Skilled Person in reviews undertaken under s166 of FSMA 2000 and under equivalent regulations in other countries; and Scheme Actuary on schemes of arrangement,  
I also have extensive Solvency II experience including the standard formula; developing and validating internal models; calculating technical provisions on a Solvency II basis; Solvency II balance sheets; the ORSA; risk management requirements; governance requirements; reporting requirements; and providing advice and training to boards and senior management teams. In addition, I have helped numerous clients with the implementation of IFRS 17. 
My extensive experience in the general insurance sector also includes the valuation of insurance liabilities (including asbestos, pollution and health hazard liabilities, PPOs, liabilities arising from catastrophic incidents and other non-standard liabilities); providing Statements of Actuarial Opinion for Lloyd's Syndicates and Irish insurers; actuarial due diligence in mergers and acquisitions; design, construction and validation of Internal Models and other capital models; setting up an actuarial team and acting as de facto Chief Actuary and Chief Underwriting Officer for a large insurer; strategic reviews of insurance operations; provision of strategic advice to senior management; design and implementation of management information systems; rating of portfolios and individual risks; reviews of rating adequacy; design and construction of pricing models; and review and optimisation of reinsurance programmes. 
 
Prior to joining the firm, I was the Chief Actuary for Travelers Insurance Company Limited in the UK and Ireland. In addition, following a large insurer entering administration, I fulfilled the roles of Chief Actuary and Chief Underwriting Officer for two years. As part of this role, I was responsible for all aspects of actuarial work.
